Life course is increasingly studied by social scientists, who have at their disposal longitudinal surveys and retrospective surveys. This paper presents a retrospective, quantitative survey, conducted in the northeast quarter of France, to identify the typical career paths of low-skilled adults and young adults involved in training programs. The results show situations that confirm the diversity of the direction they choose. Their concepts of training depend on their professional experience and level of qualification, although they all expect a lot of their training, especially in terms of school-to-work transition. Their hopes are often not met. In the short term, training programs meet the need for socialization, grant a kind of social legitimacy, and even contribute to development of a certain autonomy—all observations that question the training provided for low-skilled and poorly educated adults.
