A history of epidemics

A history of epidemics - 2021.
9
Epidemics are as old as humankind and all populations are, or have been, affected by them at one point or another in their history. Some of them have been responsible for high, sometimes considerable, numbers of deaths, and have had major health, social, cultural, religious, political, and economic consequences. Epidemics are complex biological phenomena that result from interactions between three categories of factors: the microbes responsible, the host populations they colonize, and the environment in which all of this evolves. The dynamics of epidemics have varied over time as these different factors have changed. An overview of the major epidemics of the past can shed light on our understanding of current epidemics. Knowledge of infectious agents and their natural history provides useful information about the organization of monitoring, the development of diagnostic and therapeutic tools, the development of control methods, and the design of future epidemic prevention programs.
