The axolotl is a kind of salamander living in the Mexican lakes. Since a hundred years, this animal arouses a major scientific interest because of its uncommon biological characteristics: it’s judged archaic, it reproduces during its larval phase and it possesses a strong regeneration capacity of most body parts. This batrachian didn’t generate any myth or legend but he inspired the literature of fantasy. This article presents the scientific knowledge about axolotl, the imaginary associated and three literary texts − by the American Robert Abernathy, the Argentinean Julio Cortazar and the French cartoonist Caza − which use this animal figure.
