Shaman Ethics and the Korean Spirit of Neoliberalism - 2014.

9

This study applies the theoretical framework of the sociology of the heart to the elective affinity between shamanism and survivalism in the age of neoliberalism in South Korean society. It analyzes the transformation of Korea’s ethico-culturalism after the financial crisis of 1997, tracing movement from authenticity to survivalism, with the most important value being the survival of the individual. On the premise that the religious origin for this survivalism is Korean shamanism, the shamanic ethic is analyzed according to three factors: eudemonism, pragmatism, and kratophany. A theoretical sketch of the sociology of the heart summarizes the formation, origin, and structure of the “the heart of the times.” Findings show the triangular structure of the dominant center of neoliberalized Korean society, meaning the constellation constituting of a regime of the social (neo-liberalism), a regime of the heart (survivalism), and its religious origin (shamanism).
