Singular cinematographic spaces that the cinema of Kim Ki-duk has explored can be qualified as heterotopic. They are not only grotesque, gloomy and eccentric, but also locatable: they are situated in real places in Korea. A notable part of the work of this director consists of locating heterotopias within Korean society and using then them to construct its cinematographic spaces, before applying their characteristics to characters, events, and even images. Another place, the body, which undergoes all forms of violence in Kim’s films, bears witness to a mortifying social rigidity. Further images, born mainly from the heterotopic places in Kim’s cinema, challenge both Korean society and its typical imagery.
