Jurema: Worship, religion, and public space - 2018.

18

In this work we aim to comprehend the symbolic constructions used by the followers of Jurema (a form of Afro-Amerindian religiosity) in their search for legitimation. We will develop an approach to this religiosity, which is built on a symbolic basis, that deals with ethno-religious representations of Amerindians and Africans in Brazil’s Northeast Region, and thereby come to understand how the process of popularization, institutionalization, and integration into the public space of Jurema practice is organized in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. We work with the idea that its main demand is its legitimation as an autonomous religion. We therefore consider the worship of Jurema, whether practiced among indigenous groups in the Northeast Region or in the urban space of the Metropolitan Region of Recife, as a continuous process of transformation. Faced with a fluidized and globally connected world, Jurema also claims its legitimacy in the field of national society.
