Now well established in organizations, the internal communication function (IC) is subject to multiple assessments: measures of efficiency and reporting tools are becoming the norm. With reference to the theoretical framework proposed by Thévenot (2006) and his conceptualization of “regimes of engagement”, this article shows that practices of measurement and evaluation are part of the legitimation strategies used by IC professionals in response to conventional norms. It develops the hypothesis that the evaluation of IC and its practitioners is in fact a form of recognition and serves to shape the professional identity of IC practitioners.
