The issue of non-take-up and not reaching targeted populations is currently of growing concern to policy makers. This article presents the circumstances of its emergence three decades ago, in parallel with my own research career. The aim is not to present a socio-history of non-take-up as a category of analysis and action. Instead, this testimony shows what can sustainably make a difference when the sociologist’s profession (also) consists in opening the way to potentially uncomfortable questions: in particular, the exploration of strong research hypotheses, the creation of tools required for fruitful exploration and the taking into account of results, and the choice of a sober and direct scientific language.
