This evaluation explores empirically the concept of multidisciplinary maisons de santé (non-ambulatory care centers), which are considered a solution to retaining physicians in remote areas and to simultaneously improving the quality of care. Our sample consisted of 9 health centers and 71 health professionals, of whom 32 were physicians practicing in two regions. We combined data collected by questionnaire, visits, and interviews. Professional activity and the consumption of care by patients were assessed on the basis of claims data drawn from a national medical insurance database. A comparison was made with professionals and patients in a baseline local area for each health center. Beyond the heterogeneity found across health centers in terms of location, size, and number of professionals involved, we found a higher level of equipment than in average practices, greater access in the day, week, and year, and many forms of informal collaboration. With the same level of medical activity, physicians reported taking longer vacations. Different levels of collaboration can be identified according to the level of substitution between physicians. In conclusion, multidisciplinary health centers enable physicians to find a new balance between work and leisure and offer greater accessibility to patients.
