The Role of School Physicians in the Diagnosis of Pervasive Developmental Disorders - 2012.

13

This study examined children with significant socialization problems receiving community care but without a diagnosis. An investigation conducted among school doctors working in Seine-Saint-Denis (Paris, France) showed that 3.9 per 1000 nursery school pupils (maternelle) and 0.2 per 1000 middle school pupils (collège) suffered from a pervasive developmental disorder. Quantitative and qualitative data show the difficulty of obtaining a diagnosis and assessment that complies with the recommendations of the French National Authority for Health. The study showed that more than 50% of parents of children with a recognized disability had either not been informed of or not understood their child’s diagnosis.
