An Experience of Group Therapy for Sex Offenders - 2008.

Psychotherapy is both a work of searching for the meaning of the origins of the suffering often actualized in symptoms, and a process of change whose goal is accessing new emotional and relational experiences in life. This article attests this double work on the past and on the present, in the context of the therapeutic group for sex offenders that we lead. We clarify our representations of the culture of the family of origin of these patients, particularly about what may have “contributed” to the sexual abuse of the next generation. These associations allow the patient to achieve a sense of coherence and to be less determined by their history. In the therapy, the patient can progressively experiment with new emotional and relational modalities in which respect and freedom prevail over constraint. We illustrate this work with clinical cases and discuss the specificities of our approach, particularly the way to explore the transgenerational dimension and our intervention style. Finally we discuss the interest of the group setting and of the co-therapy.
