Beyond the Traumatism: Suspended Situation, Family on the Move - 2010.
38
The vegetative state, a consequence of the progress in intensive care, induces a durable trauma in the family that can last several years. The family will have to deal with this “floating” situation for an unknown time: their close relative is not dead, but not quite alive either. We shall here follow Kevin, a young patient in a persistent vegetative state, and his family. How are they going to face this ordeal? What process will be activated in order to find some equilibrium after the chaos of this situation? What will be the place of this young man, who is both present and absent to his pathology? We will follow this family through different stages: from the normative crisis to the chaos caused by the trauma, and to an apparent position of resilience.
