A family that has lived through a traumatic experience must not only survive but reinvent itself, so that it remains a reassuring framework in which each member finds the necessary impetus to fulfill their double need for affiliation and individuation. How can this process can be achieved and maintained in families where a child’s disability constitutes a traumatic event? Through the case of Karine, whom we met at a specialized institution for children and adolescents with motor impairment, we will examine the temporal and mythical breakdown that can be triggered by a disability. Through the description of this medical case and theoretical knowledge of systemic epistemology, we will examine ways of approaching families faced with disability and the role of institutions and multidisciplinary teams in these atypical situations.
