Less than a year after the passing of Dominique Kalifa, this article examines some of this great historian’s contributions to the discipline and to the community of historians more broadly. It emphasises some of the main fault lines in his work: his approach to chronological and temporal divisions; his relationship to the discipline, and in particular to social and cultural history; and his relationship to source materials, as well as his desire to share with the largest audience possible.
