The 1960s linking the period between the two world wars and today was key in the life of French people in the distance covered by the practice of sports. While social and economic reasons are very often mentioned, the bases of this spread are rarely explained. Through school and then the upheavals having to do with physical education, the meeting of sports with childhood was decisive. Physical education became a cultural vector, allowing a whole generation to have access to practices previously reserved for a minority. Linked to politicians’ interest in sports, this change created the conditions for the appropriation of a mass sports culture, an appropriation that saw in the 1970s the unprecedented development of sports practice in the French society. The spread of sports practices shows the central role of the school in the stratification of social behavior leading to cultural transformations.
