The Islamist movement Hamas was founded in Gaza in December 1987 but it has its roots in four decades of Muslim Brotherhood activities that were rarely legal in this territory. Studying the period from the founding of the Muslim Brotherhood in Gaza in 1946 to the first Palestinian Intifada illustrates a complex process of evolution and mutation: The Muslim Brotherhood’s support of the 1952 Egyptian revolution propelled young activists to leave the Islamist movement and create the first Fedayin cells in Gaza, the historic heart of Fatah. This divorce between Islamists and Fedayins worsened in 1967 when Sheikh Yasin refused to join the resistance against the Israeli occupation of Gaza. However, Yassin’s and Fatah supporters joined forces in 1980 against the progressive militants in Gaza.
