Between transmission and construction of identity: The case of children of elderly African immigrants - 2016.

22

Based upon a study of two generations of adults (parents and adult children), this article studies the transmissions and relations within families of sub-Saharan African origin living in France. The double reference to countries of attachment is a constant feature of practices, values, norms, and educational principles. Construction of personal identities is marked by multiple references that differ according to the generation to which they belong. While parents stay attached above all to their African identity (ethnic and national), they recognize the “French” portion in themselves. The younger generation declares that they feel themselves to be French citizens and would like to be recognized as such. While the young express an interest in Africa, proof of the attachment to their origins, they are not tempted to live there.
