RésuméDurant la guerre d’Indépendance, de 1808 à 1814, les entreprises espagnoles ont été confrontées à un occupant français qui, certes, ne se souciait guère de contrôler ni d’orienter la production, mais qui n’en avait pas moins besoin, pour ses opérations, de fournitures en produits de toutes sortes. D’autre part, les actions de guérilla et les combats avec le corps expéditionnaire britannique ont détruit certaines installations productives, en particulier dans les vieux centres textiles de Palencia et de Burgos. Enfin les entrepreneurs ont dû faire des choix difficiles, des « afrancesados », tentés par la collaboration avec les Français, aux attentistes et aux résistants. On trouve ainsi dans ce conflit, dont l’âpreté anticipe sur les guerres plus contemporaines, tous les éléments qui montrent comment une situation d’occupation peut affecter durablement l’économie d’un pays et contribuer, à terme, à aggraver son retard dans la voie de l’industrialisation. During the War for Independence, between 1808 and 1814, Spanish enterprises were facing occupying French troops which did not care to control them nor to steer their production. Still those troops needed all kinds of supplies for their operations. On the other hand, the guerilla against French troops and the fights with the British expeditionary force had heavy consequences on some industrial works, especially those located in old textile towns like Palencia and Burgos. At least businessmen had to make their choice between several issues. The “afrancesados” were attracted by a collaboration with the French. Other businessmen were practising the politics of wait and see, others belonged to the resistance. Through its harshness, this war anticipates features of other more recent conflicts. It had a bad effect on the Spanish economy as a whole. Spain was soon a late comer in the industrialisation. At the end of the war, it was still more handicapped.
