This article examines the concept of “progress in spiritual life” put forward by Freud to characterize the emergence of monotheism as an increased demand for abstraction, which is fulfilled through the taboo of the representation of God and through the substitution of patriarchy to matriarchy. The author notes some limitations of this thesis while considering it in its context.
