Deliberative democracy, citizenship and emancipatory participation: the political dimension of the solidarity economy - 2023.

This article highlights the political dimension of the solidarity economy, emphasising the importance of participation in emancipatory processes. First, we show that the criticisms of classical sociology – according to which the solidarity economy does not allow for a political emancipation project – overlook the participatory processes that underpin it. We then turn to the case of Conjunto Palmeiras, a neighbourhood in Fortaleza, Brazil, to examine this perspective from the angle of solidarity economy structures. The history of community mobilization and social organization, stimulated by local associations, has influenced public policies and constituted a form of governance that promotes political, social, cultural and economic emancipation. Based on the relations between the theoretical approaches and the lessons from this practice, we go on to support the argument that an understanding of the solidarity economy must go beyond the analytical perspective focused on the economic dimension to analyses that consider the political dimension, around the autonomization of the individual and the collective, through emancipatory participation and active citizenship.
