By 2020, there will be almost 208 million Chinese tourists worldwide. They arrive en-masse in Paris and its region to visit museums and monuments, but they are “victims” of a number of cultural stereotypes, mostly negative. According to preconceived ideas, they are low-educated, rude, and at odds with France’s “bon goût” art lover codes of practice. Are these stereotypes or reality? This article attempts to analyze the stereotype of this hurried visitor and how the Palace of Versailles is seen as a paragon of French “romanticism” in their visiting experience. This historic site offers a relevant field of investigation not only in terms of French history (the monarchy, the revolution of 1789) but also as an artistic place of French “bon goût” linked to prestigious values at a time of global tourism.
