This article examines the correlations between homophobia, heteronormativity, and heterosexism, as well as elements specific to identity-building among sexual minorities and the resulting effects on mental health. We discuss heteronormativity among care workers and its impact on care. Finally, we uncover the questions these minoritized patients bring to bear on our clinical practice. Covering topics from therapists’ neutrality to the rise of the “safe therapist” concept, we offer a reflection on psychotherapeutic practice in the light of the social sciences and feminist and gender studies. We argue in support of an inclusive, intersectional clinic, informed by situated knowledge.
