The aim of this article is to study the ideological and discursive motivations of those classical authors who point out the existence of a historical gap between a period when slavery did not exist, or had little significance, and another time where slavery was widespread. The interest of Diodorus Siculus, Appian, Plutarch, and Athenaeus in the subject coincides with the use of a series of moral concepts, such as hybris and tryphe, which were also closely connected to Stoicism. In the process, the figure of Posidonius played an important role.
