Veterans in the countryside of the Roman province of Moesia Inferior: The landowners
Mihailescu-Bîrliba, Lucreţiu
Veterans in the countryside of the Roman province of Moesia Inferior: The landowners - 2019.
68
The author investigates the inscriptions on veterans in the countryside of Lower Moesia. Particular attention is paid to landowners directly or indirectly attested by epigraphic sources. The veterans’ presence in the countryside of Moesia Inferior is quite remarkable and one can say that they represent the main category in the “epigraphic habit,” next to the local elites (in some cases, they are also the local elite). The analysis focuses on two mains directions: the investigation of inscriptions mentioning veterans originally from Lower Moesia who returned home or settled elsewhere in the province; the study of sources evoking veterans coming from other provinces.
