The aim of this article is to explore the ethical issues surrounding childbirth practices through the aspects of freedom of choice, effects on maternal and infant health, as well as psychological effects on the mother, her partner, and their newborn. Current methods encouraging the hospitalization and medicalization of the birth are criticized and alternative solutions are suggested in order to promote families’ wellbeing.
