Different sources concerning ancient Roman society show the use of slaves as wet nurses. This job provided wealth for those who owned slave women; however, it is also an example of female body exploitation. Along with this conception, there are stories about close relationships between some of the upper classes and their wet nurses, who after years of services, and as an award, were manumitted, a gesture that has been analyzed by historians as an example of humanity within slavery; however, this approach ignores the abuse of female slave body. All in all, it is also interesting to reflect about this occupation, focusing on what it meant to be wet nurse for free people and slaves.
