Transition to Parenthood and Reorganization of the Couple’s Relationship

Transition to Parenthood and Reorganization of the Couple’s Relationship - 2013.
67
The transition to parenthood leads to a major reorganization of relationship within the couple, especially regarding the development of co-parenting, defined as the mutual support parents give one another in how they relate to the child. Research work and clinical practice have shown that co-parenting is influenced by a number of variables: mainly marital satisfaction, paternal involvement, maternal gatekeeping, social representations of parental roles and the parents’ personalities. Non cohesive co-parenting – where parents show no mutual support or are even in open conflict – has a negative impact on the development of the child. We present the results of a longitudinal study which has shown that co-parenting dynamics can be assessed very early, even during pregnancy, paving the way for how preventive interventions can be thought out before the birth of the child.
