While attachment to a referent person is considered to be essential in the mental construction of a young child, this theory is rarely considered when it comes to addressing the symptoms and signs of the elderly and the nature of their relationships with others.Old age can sometimes lead to greater physical and psychological vulnerability bringing the aged to become more dependent on others, in most cases recognized as the main family caregiver. The present article’s purpose is to explore, through examples of attachment in ageing couples and attachment in nursing homes, the reasons why this notion of attachment is reactivated in old age and to what extent the theory of attachment can help us understand the symptoms and signs of the ageing subject.
