This article argues that it is not the child’s sleep disorder and the way it is put to bed–as subject to controversy in epidemiological studies–that encourage the incestual context or impinge on the child’s autonomy. Rather it is the incestual context as Racamier understands it that fits into the phase of mutual narcissistic seduction in the mother-child intersubjective (or mothering parent-child) interaction and fosters the distortion of that relation due to the denial of an imaginary absence in the parent, a denial that contaminates the child. A fusional relationship of an incestuous nature is then perpetuated that transforms the bonds between the two partners into perverted narcissistic alliances that can lead to genitally or psychically expressed incest. Clinical studies show that this relational distortion is to be encountered both in the incestual mothering father-daughter context and in father-daughter incest.
