First, the authors propose a distinction between French secularism and Belgian pluralism based on positive state intervention in the promotion of diversity through state financing of religion and its instruction in public schools. The authors then relate the work of the Commission of Intercultural Dialogue, the Belgian counterpart to the Stasi Commission, which, to its credit, understood the political stakes of integration, without focusing on the headscarf issue. The third part is consecrated to the wearing of religious symbols in schools. Operating in a fog because of the lack of a principled ruling or law, the schools are nonetheless forced to take a position.
