From the moment William of Orange arrived in England in 1688, the Glorious Revolution came to be interpreted in different—and often contradictory—ways, since recounting the event means giving it a meaning, legitimizing it, or, on the contrary, condemning it. The Jacobites, supporters of the deposed king, James II, immediately denounced the Glorious Revolution, using biblical rhetoric that defended divine right. But in Orangist sources, these defenders of the established order in turn become rebels: disobeying their legitimate sovereign, William III.?The Jacobites take little offense at this, and some of them, Jacobite Whigs, do not hesitate to present themselves as revolutionaries, upholding the values of 1688 even if, in their opinion, William III betrayed their ideals.
