During the last decade, many authors have focused on urban growth dynamics. Some authors claim that urban growth follows a random walk process, while others consider that it is rather a deterministic process depending upon city size. Most empirical studies deliver evidence on the relationship between urban growth and industrialized countries’ urban systems. By focusing on city-size distribution in India between 1981 and 2005, this paper applies econometric tools in order to test the nature of urban growth within a country that has undergone important economic and social changes during this period.
