Zionism in Algeria (1898-1962 : a marginal optionDespite the fact that Algeria was relatively open to Zionist militancy, Zionism only became a somewhat important factor among Algerian after the Second World War and during the Algerian War. This article examines the various forms of Zionism that took hold in Algeria, while at the same time attempting to understand the reasons for the movement’s weakness, which was very different from the situation in the two adjacent Protectorates. In a certain sense, the Algerian Jewish community can be said to have reproduced the French model, operating in its own way – especially between 1947 and 1952 – in a paternalistic manner. Algeria was above all a transit country for the Aliyah of other North African Jews, in particularly Moroccans. Furthermore, the Zionist activity that did develop in Algeria was reserved to certain sectors of the Jewish population struggling with identity issues, rather than the outcome of relations between Jews and the surrounding society.
