Le PCF face à la guerre d’Éthiopie (1935-1936) Défenseur de l’Éthiopie face à l’agression italienne, le PCF, fort des succès enregistrés grâce à sa stratégie antifasciste, dut compter, dans ses prises de position, avec les sentiments pacifistes du peuple de gauche en marche vers le pouvoir.Veillant, à l’instar de la diplomatie soviétique, à ne pas conforter la Grande-Bretagne, puissance impérialiste dont les intérêts étaient malmenés dans l’affaire par Mussolini, il dut prendre en compte la priorité accordée au théâtre européen par Staline. Devant ménager le fascisme italien de crainte d’un rapprochement Rome-Berlin, incapable d’adopter une attitude claire en matière de Défense nationale, il put franchir avec succès le cap de la remilitarisation de la Rhénanie à la faveur d’un climat pré-électoral peu propice aux décisions tranchées. The French Communist Party (PCF) stood up for Ethiopia against the Italian aggression. In a strong position because of its antifascist strategy, the PCF had to take care of the pacifist feelings among leftist people on the eve of acceding to power. Like Soviet diplomacy, it was concerned with not supporting Britain, as an imperialist power threatened, in that case, by Mussolini, and it had to take into account the priority given by Stalin to the European scene. Having to treat tactfully Italian fascism for fear of bringing closer Rome and Berlin, unable to adopt a clear standpoint in the question of national defence,the PCF could pass the turning point of Hitler’s remilitarization of Rhineland thanks to an election-time climate that was not favourable to clear-cut decisions.
