Sweden found it very hard to face its past as a neutral power. The country had to make a significant contribution to the German war effort, and Swedish iron ore and ball bearings certainly prolonged Germany’s ability to fight the war. Moreover, its restrictive attitude towards refugees during the 1930’s, its trade with the Reich until early 1945, the opportunity given to German troops to transit through Sweden on their way to occupied Norway would weigh on the conscience of a country that long pretended to be the moral reference of Europe, and that still likes to give sermons to others. An examination of the Swedish past (various aspects, even if irrelevant here, such as negative eugenics after the war) was also a kind of necessary moral duty in order to enter the European Union.
