During World War II and the Holocaust, the Nazi regime engaged in significant Arabic-language propaganda aimed at North Africa and the Middle East. This propaganda took the form of printed materials distributed by the Wehrmacht’s Afrikakorps and above all, short-wave radio broadcasts from Germany itself. The propaganda was a form of political warfare that complemented Hitler’s unsuccessful efforts to win the war in North Africa. German government archives contain some German-language translations of these broadcasts and some printed materials in Arabic. Yet by far the most extensive record of the campaign was compiled by American diplomats working in wartime Cairo. There they recorded, transcribed and translated several thousand pages based on the hundreds of broadcasts sent to the region, especially from 1941 to 1945. The “Axis in Arabic” texts were one result of the collaboration between Arab exiles in Berlin and the Nazi regime. They reveal the cultural fusion between Nazism, Islamism and radical nationalism with which the Nazis sought to gain adherents and which continued to exert an impact on politics in the Middle East after World War II.
