The topic of the return to Romania of Roma deported to Transnistria during the Holocaust in Romania little discussed in the literature. What was the legal status of the Roma when they reached Romania, and what measures were taken by the authorities in regard to the returnees? This article aims to examine these questions, emphasizing the continuity of repression and exploitation of the returning Roma in the territory of the former Romania. Taking as a case study the situation of more than 200 Roma returning from Transinistria and stopped on the spot by the local authorities from Râmnicu Sărat County, we highlight how official orders were designed to keep the returning Roma outside the Romanian neam (nation), defined as a bio-ethnic body.
