Jews of the Maghreb in the Marais, from the inter-war period to the 1950s, by Jean LaloumFrom the inter-war period onward, several North African Jewish families, mostly from Algeria, settled south of the Marais, in the middle of the Parisian Yiddishland. During the Occupation, although some of them were decimated by deportations, a few individuals nevertheless managed to escape persecutors by presenting themselves as Muslims. In the immediate post-war period, the Sephardic element gradually permeated and revitalized Parisian Jewishness. The arrival in France, from April 1962, of some 110,000 Jews from Algeria decisively intensified the transformation of the Parisian community landscape which was already taking root throughout the 1950s.
