En 1849, la veuve de Christian William Nicolay of London fit don à l’Irlande de deux copies de cartons réalisés par Raphaël, à savoir « La guérison du boiteux », 3,76 m sur 5,41 m (NGI 171), et « L’aveuglement d’Élymas », 3,76 m sur 4,52 m (NGI 172). Décrites comme des tempéras sur papier, ces copies se trouvent à la National Gallery depuis 1862.Il existe des doutes quant à leur provenance. Certains disent que Sir Joshua Reynolds se serait procuré ces œuvres lors d’un de ses voyages dans la région historique des Pays-Bas en 1781 ou 1785 ; d’autres affirment qu’il les aurait achetées en Italie. Après sa mort en 1792, elles passent par les mains de plusieurs « propriétaires » (acquises par don ou achat), comme Giuseppe Marchi, l’assistant de Sir Joshua et Robert Brown, qui les réunit vers 1818. M. Nicolay les achète en 1835. Two copies of Raphael Cartoons, ‘The Healing of the Lame Man’, 3.76 m x 5.41 m (NGI 171) and ‘The Blinding of Elymas,’ 3.76 m x 4.52 m (NGI 172), were donated to Ireland in 1849 by the widow of Christian William Nicolay of London. They are described as ‘tempera on paper’ and have been in the National Gallery since 1862.This article gives an up-to-date account of efforts to establish their provenance. Some say they were acquired by Sir Joshua Reynolds on one of his trips to the Low Countries in 1781 or 1785, others that he acquired them in Italy. After his death in 1792, they passed, either by gift or purchase, to several ‘owners’, Giuseppe Marchi, Sir Joshua’s assistant, and Robert Brown who reassembled them about 1818. Mr. Nicolay bought them in 1835.
