Summary, etc. Élisabeth Carter reste une inconnue de l’histoire de l’Éducation nouvelle. Pourtant, son itinéraire au croisement de l’histoire du féminisme et de l’Éducation nouvelle et populaire reflète un cheminement personnel ainsi que l’illustration des combats d’une génération de femmes pédagogues belges. Son engagement théosophique et maçonnique fut très longtemps nié. Il nous semble pourtant qu’il s’agit d’un élément majeur de compréhension de ses prises de position. Après avoir précisé son itinéraire professionnel d’enseignante d’éducation nouvelle, cette contribution souligne l’importance de son engagement théosophique et maçonnique dans sa vision de l’éducation ainsi que son action d’éducation populaire avec la création de la bibliothèque «l’heure joyeuse».

Summary, etc. Élisabeth Carter remains an unknown in the history of new education. Yet her itinerary at the crossroads of the history of feminism and new and popular education reflects a personal journey but also illustrates the struggles of a generation of belgian women pedagogues. Her theosophical and masonic commitment was long denied. It seems to us, however, that this is a major element in understanding her positions. After having clarified her professional itinerary as a teacher of new education, this contribution underlines the importance of her theosophical and masonic commitment in her vision of education as well as her action of popular education with the creation of the library L’Heure Joyeuse.
