| Summary, etc. | La conquête de l’Indochine par la France provoque l’apparition de nouvelles élites locales qui s’accommodent de cette domination et adoptent le mode de vie des coloniaux. L’armée française a joué un rôle très actif dans cette démarche car elle ne s’est pas contentée de la surveillance des populations indochinoises après 1887. Elle a, volontairement ou non, diffusé des pratiques physiques et sportives au sein de ces groupes autochtones particuliers ; elle a ainsi contribué à faire apparaître de nouvelles catégories d’individus acculturés aux sports. Cet article vise tout d’abord à analyser les prodromes de ce processus en Cochinchine et au Cambodge, avant la Grande Guerre ; puis, à présenter les outils institutionnels et les premiers résultats de cette politique dans les années 1920 ; enfin, à identifier les acteurs coloniaux et leurs relais indochinois. |

| Summary, etc. | France’s conquest of Indochina resulted in the emergence of a new local elite that accepted this domination and adopted the colonials’ lifestyle. The French army controlled the Indochinese people and played a key role after 1887, by familiarizing members of the indigenous elite with physical and sporting activities, thus creating many new social groups acquainted with Western sports. This article begins by analyzing how this process was set into motion in Cochinchina and Cambodia before the Great War. It then presents the institutional tools and the outcomes of this policy, before lastly identifying the main colonial actors and their Indochinese intermediaries. |
