| Summary, etc. | L'auteur rappelle que les travaux portant sur les écrits – ici, écrits retrouvés sur des cadavres de noyés au XVIIIe siècle – n'existent que parce que d'autres travaux les ont précédés, qui portaient sur le statut de ces archives, leur forme, leurs conditions de production et la manière dont on les fait parler. Ainsi la recherche historique (ou anthropologique) sur ces écrits de pauvres – actes non littéraires d'écriture, bribes de vie – doit-elle tenir compte en particulier d'un mouvement général de notre société qui consiste à « hausser » ces archives du peu. De ces papiers, les historiens n'avaient pas pu jusqu'ici penser qu'ils pouvaient s'inscrire dans une culture de l'écrit, parce qu'émanant d'illettrés. Il s'agit pourtant, sans les surinterpréter, d'essayer de saisir ce qu'ils nous apprennent de ces populations précaires – dont on croyait tout savoir de la vie, et qui disent pourtant autre chose, en se servant de l'écriture. |

| Summary, etc. | The author reminds us that research about hand-written papers – here writings found on drowned corpses in the 18th century – exist only thanks to previous works about the status of archives, their form, their conditions of production and the way we interpret them. Historical or anthropological research on these notes, written by destitute people – – non-literary acts of writing, bits of lives – must particularly take into account a general movement in our society, consisting in « upgrading » these archives of the poor. It had never occurred to historians before that these papers might carry a culture of writing, because they had been produced by illiterates. We must now try to make out – without over-interpreting them – what they teach us about these precarious populations, whose lives we thought we thoroughly knew, and who are finally telling us something else through writing. |
