| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe programme MML de l’Union Européenne a financé ces dernières années de nombreux projets de rapprochement de la science et des scientifiques avec d’autres acteurs de la société civile. Il s’agissait de répondre aux inquiétudes de la société sur les enjeux de la production scientifique, de limiter les incompréhensions entre les experts scientifiques et la société, en particulier en situation de crise pendant lesquelles des décisions à fort impact sociétal sont prises sur la base de résultats scientifiques. D’autres organisations internationales et d’autres initiatives vont dans le même sens. Mais dans le même temps les sources d’information et de diffusion de la connaissance s’étendent et se diversifient, faisant largement appel aux outils électroniques. L’information dite scientifique est de plus en plus disponible, mais aussi paradoxalement de plus en plus compétitive et critiquée voire « manipulée ». Les enjeux de société qui mettent en jeu la science sont aussi de plus en plus nombreux, et la capacité à partager l’expertise scientifique de façon démocratique et consensuelle devient de fait un sujet qui déborde largement les frontières nationales. |

| Summary, etc. | Science, society and shared expertise: a European issue?In recent years, the MML action plan has funded many projects designed to bring about a rapprochement between science (and scientists) and other civil society actors. The aim was to respond to social concerns about the various issues raised by science and to close the gap between scientific experts and society, especially during periods of crisis, when decisions that have a profound impact on society are taken on the basis of scientific findings. Other recent international organizations and initiatives have had similar objectives. At the same time, a wide range of sources of information and dissemination have emerged and developed in recent years, based on an extensive use of electronic tools and resources. While scientific information is becoming increasingly available, it has also paradoxically become increasingly subject to competition and criticism, and even ‘manipulation’. A growing number of societal issues and challenges surrounding science have also emerged, and the capacity to share scientific expertise democratically and consensually has become an issue that transcends national boundaries. |
