Summary, etc. | Pilier de toute politique et de tout programme de santé publique, l’éducation pour la santé est souvent mal comprise par les décideurs et les représentants de la société civile qui en surestiment la portée ou au contraire, en négligent les aspects les plus prometteurs. Dans cet article, l’auteur définit la contribution de cette stratégie en la replaçant dans l’espace des actions préventives et dans celui des actions de promotion de la santé. Il met en garde contre la propension à restreindre les perspectives théoriques qui guident les actions à celles centrées sur les caractéristiques individuelles occultant du même coup l’influence des environnements physiques et socio-économiques sur les choix en matière de santé. Il conclut en plaidant pour une pratique de l’éducation émancipatrice des individus et collectivités et pour le déploiement de stratégies populationnelles fondées sur des modèles théoriques éprouvés de promotion de la santé. |

Summary, etc. | From behavior change to the improvement of living conditions. Toward ethical and effective health educationHealth education is the basis of all public health policies and programs. However, the fundamental principles of health education are often misunderstood by decision-makers and other key social actors, who often overestimate the impact of health education or overlook its benefits. This paper examines the benefits of health education from the point of view of preventive measures and health promotion measures. The paper highlights the tendency to restrict the theoretical perspectives underlying the development of programs to an examination of intra-individual factors, thus overlooking the constraining effects of the physical and social environment on health decisions. The paper concludes by recommending a form of health education aimed at individual and collective emancipation and by calling for the implementation of population health strategies based on tried and tested theoretical models of health promotion. |
