| Summary, etc. | Le mont Ventoux est depuis des siècles l’objet d’une fascination autour de laquelle gravite une mythologie, tantôt en en faisant un mont maléfique, tantôt un mont permettant l’accès à la félicité, à l’accomplissement de soi. Comment les représentations nées de cette mythologie colportée et construite par la littérature, puis la presse du xixe siècle, innervent-t-elles l’histoire sportive du mont, qui commence en 1902 ? L’innervent-t-elles toujours ? Telles sont les questions qui animent à cet article, au cours duquel on reviendra sur la naissance du Ventoux comme lieu emblématique des exploits sportifs contemporains (cyclisme, course à pieds, course automobile), puis comme lieu d’expression de la dramatique sportive moderne (Tour de France, mort de Tom Simpson en 1967). Autant d’épisodes, parmi d’autres, qui permettent de voir comment le mont Ventoux est devenu, au xxie siècle, aussi bien le terrain d’expression, parabolique, de l’effort ou du sacrifice, sportif ultime, qu’un lieu de pèlerinage de masse, à la fois patrimonial et sportif. |

| Summary, etc. | For centuries, Mont Ventoux has been an object of fascination around which a mythology has grown up, and which sometimes construes it as maleficent, and sometimes as allowing access to happiness and self-fulfilment. How did the representations arising from this mythology, as peddled and constructed by literature, then by the press in the nineteenth century, stimulate the sporting history of the mountain, which began in 1902? Do they still have this effect today? These are the questions that underpin this article, in which we will cast back to the birth of Mont Ventoux as the emblematic site of contemporary sporting achievements (cycling, running, motor racing), then as the place of expression of modern sporting drama (Tour de France, the death of Tom Simpson in 1967). These episodes, like so many others, show how in the twenty-first century Mont Ventoux has become both the parabolic field of expression of effort, sacrifice or ultimate sportsmanship, and a place of mass heritage- and sports-related pilgrimage. |
