| Summary, etc. | Support de musique enregistrée, le disque compact, mis en vente en France en 1983, est un objet dont le sens et les usages varient au cours de ses quatre décennies d’existence. Il contribue en particulier à transformer les cultures sonores des jeunes Français, en introduisant de nouvelles pratiques d’écoute et modes de perception de la musique, reconfigurées au cours de son histoire : d’abord étranger aux cultures sonores des jeunes, le CD y occupe une place croissante) partir du milieu des années 1980. Devenu objet de consommation de masse au début de la décennie suivante, le compact se mue en support polysémique, incarnant simultanément le standard de l’industrie, une opportunité pour de jeunes artistes et un objet contre lequel d’autres entrent en résistance. La crise de l’édition discographique, à la fin des années 1990, s’accompagne de l’explosion de nouvelles pratiques des jeunes conduisant à redéfinir, une nouvelle fois, le rôle du CD dans les cultures sonores de ces catégories d’auditeurs. |

| Summary, etc. | Compact Disc and Musical Practices of Young People in France (1980s-2000s)Introduced in 1983 in France, the Compact Disc is a media whose meanings and uses evolve during the four decades of its history. In particular, the new format transforms the sound culture of young French listeners, as it brings forth new, changing ways to listen and perceive music. Initially launched as a product aimed at older listeners, the CD occupies a growing space in these young listeners’ practices from the mid-80s on. It becomes a mass-consumerism item in the early 90s, and becomes a polysemous media, as it simulteneously represents the industry standard, an opportunity for young artists, as well as an object against which other listeners try to resist. The industry’s crisis, in the late 90s, go along with the appearance of new ways for the youth to listen to music, which once more redefine the CD’s space and meaning within the sound culture of these listeners |
