| Summary, etc. | De nombreuses disciplines scientifiques, parmi lesquelles l’épidémiologie et les biostatistiques, se croisent dans le champ de la santé publique. Ces sciences quantitatives sont souvent, mais pas toujours, au cœur de l’exercice des futurs professionnels. Quel doit alors être le « minimum commun dénominateur » consacré à l’enseignement de l’approche quantitative dans la formation des futurs professionnels de santé publique ? En croisant le modèle développé à l’Université de Columbia et celui proposé aux étudiants de l’EHESP, les auteurs reconnaissent la nécessité d’adapter les enseignements aux compétences professionnelles requises. Ils insistent cependant sur l’intérêt de familiariser tous les étudiants aux méthodes quantitatives, quelle que soit la carrière en santé publique à laquelle ils se destinent. Le but est que, dans la prise de décision, chaque professionnel soit capable d’adopter une approche réflexive et critique vis-à-vis des données quantitatives. |

| Summary, etc. | Teaching quantitative methods in public health: the EHESP experienceMany scientific disciplines, including epidemiology and biostatistics, are used in the field of public health. These quantitative sciences are fundamental tools necessary for the practice of future professionals. What then should be the minimum quantitative sciences training, common to all future public health professionals? By comparing the teaching models developed in Columbia University and those in the National School of Public Health in France, the authors recognize the need to adapt teaching to the specific competencies required for each profession. They insist that all public health professionals, whatever their future career, should be familiar with quantitative methods in order to ensure that decision-making is based on a reflective and critical use of quantitative analysis. |
