520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Throughout the 20th century, astronauts—both real and fictional—have been portrayed as having the « right stuff », that is an exaggerated masculinity, particularly in the cinema. These representations have taken a turn toward the figure of a « twilight astronaut », whose hypercompetence is associated with a measure of painful fragility and sensitivity. This article aims at discerning the narrative and symbolic dynamics of this kind of representation, based on a study of Interstellar (Christopher Nolan, 2014) and Ad Astra (James Gray, 2019), as well as Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón, 2013) and The Martian (Alfonso Cuarón, 2015). |
