| Summary, etc. | The Italian Fascist regime sought to bring about a genuine anthropological revolution by implementing an ambitious sports policy. The aim was to build a strong, conquering new man. While the giant stature of boxer Primo Carnera embodied this project, the footballers of the Italian national team illustrated it above all through their virile play and their two world titles (1934 and 1938). Their bodies were also the object of great care. It was fragile in times when antibiotics were not yet available and surgery was sometimes perfunctory. Footballers’ bodies were subjected to regulated training, strict personal hygiene and the supervision of managers who wanted to keep them away from sinful temptations by putting them out to pasture or supervising rest periods. The body is also an economic asset in professional soccer. A well-managed career should enable the player to save up for a business while enjoying goods such as a car, or leisure activities such as beach vacations, which are still largely inaccessible to ordinary Italians. The footballer’s body in the Fascist era is therefore ambivalent : it is a symbol of the conquests to come, but also a means of social ascent and access to the forms of consumption that Fascism also promised. |

| Summary, etc. | Le régime fasciste italien a voulu mener une véritable révolution anthropologique en mettant en place une ambitieuse politique sportive. Il s’agissait de construire l’homme nouveau fort et conquérant. Si la carrure de géant du boxeur Primo Carnera a incarné ce projet, les footballeurs de l’équipe nationale italienne l’ont surtout illustré par leur jeu viril et leurs deux titres mondiaux (1934 et 1938). Leur corps a fait aussi l’objet de tous les soins. Il est fragile en des temps où les antibiotiques ne sont pas encore disponibles et où la chirurgie reste parfois sommaire. Le corps des footballeurs est soumis à des entraînements réglés, à une hygiène personnelle stricte et à la surveillance de dirigeants qui veulent l’éloigner des tentations coupables par des mises au vert ou l’encadrement des moments de repos. Le corps est aussi un capital économique dans le football professionnel. Une carrière bien menée doit permettre d’épargner pour accueillir un négoce tout en jouissant de biens comme l’automobile ou de loisirs, notamment les vacances à la plage, encore peu accessibles au commun des Italiens. Le corps du footballeur de l’époque fasciste est donc ambivalent : il est le symbole des conquêtes à venir, mais aussi un moyen d’ascension sociale et d’accès à des formes de consommation que le fascisme promet aussi. |
