Summary, etc. | S’appuyant sur une enquête ethnographique dans deux magasins d’une enseigne low cost de bricolage et sur de nombreux entretiens, cet article s’intéresse tout particulièrement aux cadres en charge d’équipes de vendeuses et de vendeurs, et à leur expérience de ce travail. Le low cost, comme modèle économique, transforme ce management de proximité, en plusieurs directions. Compression des effectifs, y compris hiérarchiques, rationalisation du travail, centralisation de la plupart des décisions, proximité avec le travail subalterne et faibles salaires éloignent ces cadres des figures légitimes de la catégorie. Les cadres ont une appréciation globalement positive du contenu de leur travail, du fait de dispositions sociales les rapprochant des mondes subordonnés. Le brouillage des frontières de la hiérarchie n’équivaut cependant pas à la disparition de cette dernière. L’activité, le titre et les trajectoires d’ascension sociale qui y ont mené constituent autant de sources de distinction pour les intéressés, contribuant également à rendre positif le rapport au travail. |

Summary, etc. | Based on an ethnographic fieldwork in two stores of a DIY retail chain and many interviews, this article deals with the labour experience of managers directly in charge of salesmen teams. Low-cost, as business model, transforms the middle management, in several ways. Downsized effectives, including hierarchies, work rationalisation, a power of decision mostly centralized, closeness to subaltern work and low wages distinguish those managers from the most legitimous figures of the category. Managers have a positive appreciation of the contents of their job, due to social dispositions that make them closer to subordinated worlds. However, the blurring of hierarchical borders does not mean that hierarchy disappears. The activity, their title (“cadre” in French) and the ascension trajectories that made it possible also constitute distinction sources, turning positive their relation to the job. |
